A visit from my parents!

Finally I got to show my parents how my life is up here! They where visiting me for about 5 days, and it was so nice to have them here!

They have been at Svalbard in the spring time before, that`s why they didn`t visit me last semester. They wanted to experience Svalbard in the autumn too =) They rented a car for a few days, so we went around and had a look at Mine 7 and the antennas over there, Mine 6, Bjørndalen, Endalen, and we went to the dock area to have a look at the worlds greatest sail ship! Me and my dad hiked up to Mine 6, it was a great hike! We all went to the rifle range to have some fun there! And I brought them to kayak polo!

Since my parents where coming, I saved one of the best parts of my reindeer meat to have a delicious dinner when they arrived. (But I had already warned my dad that I would not give him any meat before I got a bottle of whisky as a gidt, since he didn`t really believe I would manage to go hunting =P and I did get the bottle =D) I let my dad do the cooking (since his a great chef!), and we had my special dessert afterwards =) I was a bit nervous for what he would say about my job as a butcher, and got so relieved when he said I had done a great job!

It was really nice to be with my parents up here! I hope they had a great time! It´s already feeling kind of empty here now that they are gone!

But hey, now I´m soon leaving for my second cruise! And we are going all the way up to the pack ice! That`s righ, I´m heading as far north as you can possible get with a boat!

Ice Breaker Wild Kingdom!

Okay, so time to put up some pictures from this semesters Ice Breaker-party!

This time the theme was wild kingdom, and on our tickets we got assigned to different groups (Air, Ocean, Tropics, Dessert, Arctic and Norwegian forest). We were sitting together in these groups during the dinner, an each table had it`s own decorations fitting the theme. And the decorations were awesome! There was pinguins, birds, cacti, trees, clouds, leaves, waves, fish, snow, and an ice-berg!

I got to be in the Air-group, so me and a friend made a costume to be Barnacle geese! We even made a tag on our legs, since we both had been helping a scientist tag geese in Ny-Ålesund during the cruise!

People are so creative when it comes to costumes! We had a camel, hammerhead shark, kite, cloud, puffins, pinguins, coral reef, sting ray, bears, foxes, a polar bear attack, jellyfish, snail, frog, parrot, lions, zebra and a lot more!

And; we had a own IceBreaker band! With a bagpipe!! =D

It was an awesome party!

Camping in Bolterdalen

Originally my plans for last weekend was to hike over to Coles Bay and spend a night there, but that planned changed a little bit. So 2/3 of the original group joined another group who said they wanted to camp somewhere in Adventdalen. This occured to be one of the trips with least planning, but still turned out to be great! I waited to hear from this group what their plans were, so I could cope with this, but never got a reply. And then suddenly I got a call Saturday morning saying I should just pack and get ready, and we`ll take form there! Anyways, we finally got ready (after I tracked down a tent, fuel bottles, a stove, and the rest of my original group), and we were off to Bolterdalen (side-valley to Adventdalen).

We were so lucky with the weather, the sun was up, barely no wind, it was a really nice hike out in the valley =) We found the only flat, moss covered area in miles around, put up a tent and enjoyed the evening. To make a nice evening even better, I cooked a reindeer stew with the meat from my reindeer and some vegetables that a friend brought! ( I prepared the meat before I went out, I just cooked it with the rice and vegetables out in the camp=) So much better than dry tech dinner!

I was really happy that I got the last part of the polar bear guard, it was really nice to sit and watcht he sun colour the valley pink, enjoying the quietness and wake up slowly =) Then when it was time to wake up, I was already working on heating water for food and thermoses =)

Sundays goal was to hike up Soleietoppen, a cool mountaintop we could see from our camp. It was quite steep, so we started to walk in a zic-zac pattern up the sandy slope, until we reached the ridge. Unfortunately for me and another girl the ridge had not been lying in sun yet, and our hiking boots did not like ice-covered rocks. But we finally made it to the top, and could enjoy an amazing view! Our way down again went so much faster as we were sliding (on purpose) down the sandy slope, and were back at the bottom in a few minutes. We went back to our camp, had lunch, packed everything and went on our way back home again. Back in Nybyen I discovered that it had been awfully windy, some friends of mine had been worried about us camping out in the valley. I guess we were lucky to be in that valley, because we didn`t really detect any wind!

It was a great camping trip, it was so nice to get out and away a little bit! Now I´m just looking forward to get a visit from my parents this week!
